Royal Decree 822/2021, of 28 September, establishing the organisation of university education and the procedure for ensuring its quality, determines the general regulatory framework for the processes of verification, monitoring and renewal of the accreditation of official university education. For its part, Article 34 of Royal Decree 822/2021 establishes that: ‘University centres that are institutionally accredited must renew the accreditation of their official university degrees in accordance with the procedure established by each Autonomous Community in relation to the universities within its jurisdiction, which shall be decided by the Council of Universities on the basis of the mandatory and binding report of the corresponding quality agency.

With regard to institutional accreditation of centres, Royal Decree 640/2021, of 27 July, on the creation, recognition and authorisation of universities and university centres, and institutional accreditation of university centres, regulates this type of accreditation in Chapter III. In accordance with the aforementioned legislation, the evaluation process for the renewal of accreditation shall include, in all cases, a visit by external experts to the University, with the Agency for Quality Assurance in the Galician University System (ACSUG), within the Autonomous Community of Galicia, is responsible for carrying out the assessment for the renewal of accreditation, in accordance with the evaluation protocols established jointly between the evaluation agencies that comply with the European Quality Criteria and Standards.

The Faculty of Biology received a favourable evaluation report from the ACSUG for the institutional accreditation of the centre on 30 November 2018. The General Secretariat of Universities declared the institutional accreditation of the Faculty of Biology on 28 January 2019.
