Research constitutes an important activity of the Faculty of Biology. The researching activity is conducted by different Research Groups composed of researchers who work in different biology areas.
The faculty has laboratories for the different specialties, furnished with scientific-technological modern equipment that makes possible the investigation at the highest level. The specialities in our laboratories include Botanic, Cellular Biology and Histology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Animal Physiology, Plant Physiology, Genetics, Microbiology and Parasitology, Zoology, Pedology, Ecology, Immunology, Anthropology and others. Likewise, research groups of the faculty are scientifically supported by other centres of the University of Vigo such as the CACTI (Centre of Scientific and Technological Support to Research) and the ECIMAT (Toralla Marine Science Station). Diverse research groups of the faculty are in the Campus do Mar which obtained recently the name of Campus of International Excellence (Campus de Excelencia Internacional).
This is why the students of the Faculty of Biology are integrated in a scientific space where is made excellence research work with great repercussion both international and national. The scientific production of our research groups, where is integrated the teaching and research staff, is profound and materialised in numerous Doctoral Thesis, books, scientific articles, reports, conferences and communications to congresses whose number and quality increase year by year.
Students can access to the work made by the research groups through diverse vias, particularly during the last year of the degree with the End-of-Degree Project subject. In this, with the support of the tutor, they can develop small research works in the thematic lines proposed by the teachers of the faculty. Another via of access to the research activity is the collaboration scholarship offered by different official organizations (Xunta de Galicia, MEC) for the initiation of a scientific career.
After obtaining the degree of graduate, the students can guide their professional future towards the research activity through the diverse Master's degree and PhD Programmes offered by the Faculty of Biology and/or by other national and international centres.
